Reviews:

“The film doesn’t really stick by the usual werewolf mythology (there’s no transformation by full moon and no silver bullets) but it also doesn’t add anything new or interesting to the formula … Some air bladder effects were used for a brief (and incomplete) transformation scene.” The Bloody Pit of Horror

“When he’s not a werewolf, the killer likes to stare menacingly at people in public.

If he had any motives for anything he did, I would say he did this to poke fun at the inefficient police. The werewolf engages in a few kills off screen, and a few that are too dark to make out…” Bill Silvia, Man in Black Reviews

Night Shadow does feature gratuitous Aldo Ray (star power!) playing the traveling inventor father type from Gremlins, an almost okay werewolf suit, a martial arts enthusiast whose wardrobe consists of cut off take tops, a crucial werewolf diary, and Kato Kalien. While Night Shadow fails at being a semi competent werewolf horror movie, it’s mildly amusing…” Smellington, Letterboxd.com

vampire-diaries

The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Williamson (Scream; I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Julie Plec (co-producer of Scream 2 and 3; Cursed), based on the popular book series of the same title written by L. J. Smith. The series premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009.

The series takes place in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional small town haunted and surrounded by supernatural beings such as vampires, werewolves and witches.

The pilot episode attracted the largest audience for The CW of any series premiere since the network began in 2006. The first season averaged 3.60 million viewers, and following seasons have maintained an audience of over 2 million viewers.

The series began with mixed reviews, but critics agreed as the first season progressed that the show improved. Subsequent seasons have premiered to more positive critical reception. On March 11, 2016, The CW renewed the series for an eighth season.

In 2013, a spin-off series, The Originals, was launched and is still airing.

Plot:

The series follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a teenage girl who falls deeply in love with a 162-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Stefan’s vicious, malevolent and mysterious older brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) returns with a plan to wreak havoc on the town, seeking revenge against his younger brother for turning him into a vampire against his will. Because Elena resembles their past love Katherine Pierce, Damon also begins to fall in love with Elena.

It is revealed that Elena is a descendant of Katherine, who eventually returns with plans against the trio. Elena undergoes many hardships and deaths of close family members and loved ones throughout her high school experience.

The series is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a town charged with supernatural history since its settlement of migrants from New England in the late 19th century.

Additional story lines revolve around the other inhabitants of the town, most notably Elena’s younger brother Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen), her best friends Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) and Caroline Forbes (Candice King), and their mutual friends Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) and Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig).

The town’s politics are orchestrated by descendants of the original founding families, all comprising a “Founders’ Council.” The founding families of Mystic Falls includes the Salvatores, the Gilberts, the Fells, the Forbes, and the Lockwoods. They guard the town mainly from vampires, although there are many more supernatural threats such as werewolves, witches, originals, hybrids, travellers and ghosts.

Reviews:

“As expected from Ivan Cardoso, the style is intentionally trashy and much closer to comedy than horror. Most of the humour is provided by the banter between Nuno Leal Maia and Tony Tornado playing a doctor and a cop investigating the murders, but other strange plot turns are amusing too, such as the dramatic musical number literally bursting out of nowhere. There is also plenty of female nudity, of course…” Random Avenger, IMDb

Paul-Naschy-as-Dr-Moreau-Werewolf-in-the-Amazon-2005

” … most people are going to object to the humor because it’s simply not funny and it takes away from the horror elements but outside of this I think the film offers some cheap thrills. Naschy turns in a good performance in the role of Moreau and the director even allows him a few sex scenes. The supporting actors are actually better than you’d expect in a film like this. All of the actresses have very large breasts and often take their clothes off, which adds to the exploitation nature.” Michael Elliott, IMDb

Amazon-women-tribe-2005

“Naschy mostly gives speeches in his lab full of bubbling vials and when the material is as lowbrow as this you kinda feel a bit sorry for him. Still, Naschy is Naschy and since everything here is quite tongue in cheek you do respect him for being a professional about it. The rest of the movie is spent with boring elderly teens who do take their clothes off a lot and the bumbling incompetent people in charge of solving the mysterious murders in the jungle.” Joachim Andersson, Letterboxd.com

Plot:

Erin – hot, smart and single, is desperately trying to find a normal guy. She reluctantly agrees to come to her friends’ party. Dressed as a “stud finder” she is trying to find the love of her life at this crazy swinging Halloween Party. The prowling pirate, the sexy nurse, the hairy wolf man, the down to earth cave girl, the dueling strippers, the cops and S&M types, and even a half naked Sarah Palin are all trying to find some quick steamy action. The only guy that seems normal to Erin is someone dressed as a homeless man that smells bad…

Reviews:

“While Halloween Party actually is about the creepiest holiday of the year, it’s actually a rather sweet film, basically a romantic comedy in story – but with the whole cast in enjoyably silly costumes, some intentionally crude humour, writing that aspires more than to just fulfill the clichés, a directorial effort that picks up on all this, and a cast uniformly up to the task make this a rather entertaining little romp!” Mike Haberfelner, [Re]SearchMyTrash.com

“It’s filled with diverse characters, lots of laughs, and some sentimental moments as well. Changing the perspective between different cameras and rooms provides a look into many events happening at the same time. This style provides the viewer with a feeling like they are participating in the revelry, moving from room to room and watching the people at play.” LastBoneStands, The Slaughtered Bird

halloween-party-spider-scene

“While Halloween Party is quite fast paced (running time of 85 minutes), it doesn’t seem rushed in anyway. Quite frankly you’d almost wish there were just a few more minutes as the guests at this party are like no other. If only all party guests were this entertaining and free spirited. All around, Halloween Party is a hidden gem that’s a good watch if you’re looking for some good comedy.” Monique Thompson, Red Carpet Crash

Meanwhile, here is the classic transformation scene from the original, accompanied by Creedence Clearwater Revival’s song “Bad Moon Rising”:

Plot:

In the Louisiana Bayou town of Marsh Island, two farmers discover the mauled, dead body of a local young woman. Sheriff Aaron Whitaker (David Janssen) is called. The victim’s temperamental brother Lawrence Burrifors (Geoffrey Lewis) arrives at the crime scene and jumps to the conclusion that the girl’s lover committed the murder, a man whose name her brother does not know.

The town’s Dr. Drutan (John Beradino) examines the body and pronounces the girl died of a blow to the head. The sheriff investigates the crime and local residents have a variety of theories, including the belief she was killed by wild dogs. A posse forms to track down the wild dogs with little success.

Lawrence Burrifors continues to insist the killer to be his sister’s mysterious lover while the sheriff, in turn, is suspicious of him. The girl’s sick and dying father Hugh Burrifors (Paul R. DeVille), interviewed by the sheriff, warns him of the “rougarou”. The sheriff does not understand the French term…

“A fascinating modern day reworking of the werewolf myth which was filmed on location in primeval Louisiana swamps and is better written, better acted and more genuinely suspenseful than the rash of feature fright pieces which have long since replaced legitimate horror with grisly bloodletting.” The Hollywood Reporter

“You’ve got your basic made for television werewolf movie from the 1972 here. You know what that entails. It goes on a bit long with the talking, and the scares are strictly of the Night Gallery variety. That said, it’s an effective film with some creepy undertones. If the mood strikes you, it’s an entertaining little movie.” Roman’s Movie Reviews and Musings

moon-of-the-wolf

Moon of the Wolf is a well shot, well acted film that seems to have been made on location in an actual swamp or wetlands. The storyline is logical and well-presented and an effort was made to employ real-life lycanthropy folklore (the loup-garou of France) rather than some contrived Hollywood creation. The makeup effects for the werewolf are not particularly high tech, but this should not be expected for a made-for-television film of this period.” JHC3, IMDb

the-howling-space-goat-comic-book-2017

Space Goat Productions, in partnership with Studiocanal and Creative Licensing, has announced they will be producing a four-issue comic book miniseries and board game based on the 1981 Joe Dante classic horror film, The Howling.

The comic book series will be written by two-time New York Times best-selling author and former Blizzard Entertainment lead writer Micky Neilson. “I can’t even tell you how excited I am to write The Howling comic book! I saw the movie when I was seventeen. It opened an entirely new window into werewolf mythology and left a lifelong impression that influences me to this day,” said Micky Neilson. “If I could choose any license to work on, The Howling is right there at the top of the list. It still stands as my favorite all-time werewolf film. I’ve been obsessed with werewolves ever since the first time I saw it.”

“Micky’s enthusiasm is contagious,” said Space Goat’s Founder and President Shon Bury. “There is a complete dearth of quality werewolf stories on the market. Exploring the lore of The Howling with a writer of Micky’s caliber is going to be a joy ride. Werewolf fans are going to love it.”

Line art for the comic book series will be provided by industry veteran Jason Johnson, who has worked on fan-favorite books like Wetworks, Gen13, and Knight Rider. “I have always had a major fascination with werewolves!” said Johnson. “They were by far the most fearsome of monsters. I will bring this story to life like only a true werewolf connoisseur can. I am also pleased to work with the Shon and the amazing team at Space Goat. They are building something truly special.”

The four-issue comic book mini-series The Howling: Revenge of the Werewolf Queen is scheduled to be released in Summer 2017, and will take place directly after the events of the first film. The release date of the board game will be announced at a later date.

‘Rest in… beast.’

Werewolf – aka Arizona Werewolf – is a 1995 [released January 1996] American supernatural horror film produced and directed by Iranian-born Tony Zarrindast (Red RoomCat in the Cage) from a screenplay co-written with Brad Hornacher.

Archaeologists working in Arizona find a werewolf skeleton. The ill-tempered foreman, Yuri (played by Jorge Rivero) gets into a fight with his crew: Tommy, Joel, and Bill. In the course of the fight, Tommy is scratched by the werewolf skeleton. This greatly alarms his fellow diggers, especially Joel. The head archaeologist, Noel, details what he knows of werewolf behaviour, which he bases on American Indian mythology.

Tommy is taken to the hospital, where he begins showing signs of lycanthropy, and he eventually turns into a werewolf. Joel and Bill arm themselves with shotguns and silver bullets and succeed in killing their doomed former co-worker.

Meanwhile, a writer named Paul Niles (Federico Cavalli) arrives at a house in suburban Flagstaff that he has inherited. At a party, he is introduced to one of the archaeologists, Natalie Burke (Adrianna Miles) and takes a romantic interest in her. Yuri is jealous and behaves badly, which leads to his expulsion from the party by his boss Noel.

Yuri conspires to create a new werewolf; at the laboratory he drugs a security guard (played by director Tony Zarindast) and injects him with blood he earlier drew from the werewolf, Tommy. However, the creature makes the unfortunate choice of driving home, and having crashed into some oil drums, dies in the ensuing fire.

The following day, Paul visits the lab. He gets into a fight with Yuri, who attacks him with the werewolf skull. Paul is scratched by the skull, and starts showing symptoms of lycanthropy…

Reviews:

“The plot remains what I would call “serviceable” — in other words, it’s adequate if not particularly enchanting or thrilling. Kind of what you might expect a computer to spit out if you fed it the scripts of all the other werewolf movies plus a few X-Files plots and said, “Okay, shake and bake.” But the real problem here is the plethora of bizarre flaws.” Brandt Sponseller, Classic-Horror.com

“Wow, this is all kinds of bad. Slow moving broken up with some hilarious moments of ineptitude. Not to mention, the main stars after Lynch and Estevez all speak English as a second language, and sound stilted and unnatural when they deliver their lines, making for more unintentionally funny moments. What makes it a tough watch though is the long periods of inactivity.”  Matt Poirier, Direct to Video Connoisseur

” …don’t let the unusual sentences distract you from Yuri’s hair styles. His hair grows, shrinks, changes from black to brown to a reddish hue, and rises into a pompadour, and all within ten minutes. Now that’s exciting hair. If only the werewolves had been as interesting and frightening as that hair… Foster on Film

“Another astonishing fact is that there are no less than FOUR werewolves in this movie and none of them are any good.  Seriously, the make-up in this flick makes the werewolf from Teen Wolf Too look like An American Werewolf in London. Not only that, but the ending totally rips off of Wolf as well.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

Peter Sallis – actor – updated

Peter Sallis (1 February 1921 – 2 June 2017) was an English character actor, mainly known for his work on British television. He gained worldwide fame as the voice of inventor Wallace in the Wallace and Gromit films.

Although born and brought up in Twickenham, Middlesex, his two best remembered roles required him to adopt the accent and mannerisms of a Northerner. In addition to voicing the aforementioned Wallace, he famously played “Cleggy” in TV comedy series Last of the Summer Wine from its 1973 inception until its final episode in 2010, making him the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes!

Most people are unaware that Peter Sallis also played a number of roles in the science fiction and horror genres that began with a Werewolf and ended with a Were-rabbit. Fittingly, Hammer Films set the ball rolling by casting him in a minor role as Don Enrique in their censor-baiting The Curse of the Werewolf (1961).

However, he later had a pivotal Hammer horror role as Samuel Paxton, one of the English Victorian ‘gentlemen’ seeking forbidden pleasures in Taste the Blood of Dracula (1969).

His character ends up gorily staked through the heart, although the only image of his demise available seems to be a double-page spread in Alan Frank’s Horror Films book (Octopus, 1976), so perhaps it was censored from the film itself? Here’s the image:

The same year, Sallis also appeared as Schweitz in the bizarre sci-fi/horror conspiracy thriller hybrid Scream and Scream Again.

In Roald Dahl’s darkly comedic psychological thriller The Night Digger (1971) Sallis essayed the role of an eccentric vicar, whilst Full Circle aka The Haunting of Julia (1977) offered him the chance to be a chivalrous neighbour trying to take Keir Dullea’s oafish character to task (only to be rudely pushed aside).

Meanwhile, his TV appearances included a 1959 adaptation of H.G.Wells’ Invisible Man; BBC Doctor Who story “The Ice Warriors” (1967), in which he playing renegade scientist Elric Penley; Jack Smight’s stately Frankenstein: The True Story (1973); children’s series The Ghosts of Motley Hall (1976–78), in which he played Arnold Gudgin, an estate agent who did not want to see the place fall into the wrong hands; and ghost-hunter Milton Guest in the children’s paranormal series The Clifton House Mystery (1978).

Yet, perhaps Peter Sallis’ most memorable and well-known horror-related role was in the twilight of his lengthy career, when he worked on Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2005.

‘Jennifer’s mother is having an identity crisis’

My Mom’s a Werewolf is a 1988 American comedy horror film directed by Michael Fischa (Deadtime Stories: Volume 1 and 2; Mascara Diablo; Death Spa) from a screenplay by Mark Pirro (Nudist Colony of the Dead; Curse of the Queerwolf; A Polish Vampire in Burbank). It stars Susan Blakely, John Saxon, Tina Caspary and John Schuck.

The film was released in May 1989 by Crown International Pictures.

Leslie Shaber (Susan Blakely), a sexually frustrated housewife, visits a pet shop to purchase a flea-collar. Unfortunately, the charming owner Harry Thropen (John Saxon) is a werewolf.

Leslie agrees to have lunch with Harry and, smitten by his amorous advances, the pair begin an affair. Harry passionately bites Leslie’s toe and she transforms into a werewolf.

Meanwhile, Leslie desperately tries to hide her increasingly hairy appearance from her bewildered family…

Reviews:

“The transformation effects are quite terrible, the comedy is pretty flat, but nonetheless it features genre-legend John Saxon as the lycanthropic owner of a pet shop. It’s pure 80’s oddball stuff that’s not great but good fun.” McBastard’s Mausoleum

“It is enjoyable silly, although ultimately lacking in big laugh-out-loud scenes. In the end, it is hard to get too outraged about the lameness of the material – it is after all exactly what one expects from a film with a title like My Mom’s a Werewolf.” Richard Scheib, Moria

My Mom’s a Werewolf is about as bad as it gets, but the cast was solid, the acting was good, and there was an attempt by the cast to make a good movie. It just didn’t work. It had a great 80’s look to it and had they focused on making a horror movie with comedic elements rather than just a straight out comedy in the end, it would have probably been good.” Geno McGahee, Scared Stiff Reviews

“The werewolf masks are stiff and unconvincing, and the movie cheats when it comes to transformations, either simply having the fully transformed werewolves appear without seeing their transformation, or the long obsolete technique of dissolving one shot to another. So not only is My Mom’s A Werewolf an unfunny comic spin on a certain aspect of the horror genre that you don’t usually associate with humor, it isn’t even able to respect that horror genre aspect with its serious moments.” Keith Bailey, The Unknown Movies

“There were some things I liked.  I liked John Saxon’s performance. And the movie geek character who reads Famous Monsters, Fangoria, and Gorezone and has posters from other Crown International pictures like Galaxina and Prime Evil on her wall. And of course, the 80’s fashions were appropriately cheesy. Other than that, My Mom’s a Werewolf is a dog of a film.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

“Saxon, along with the film’s other stars, can be given a good deal of credit for overcoming the film’s lackluster execution. They all give funny performances, and Caspary is even likable enough to make a fairly predictable final joke quite funny.” Steve Miller, Terror Titans

“It’s obvious that the film was never suppose to be taken seriously as we have a lot of overacting, terrible costumes and cringe worthy dialog. Thankfully every actor treats it lightly with Susan Blakely making it somewhat likable. She’s obviously trying the best she can to make the movie at least seem quirky enough to stand out. There’s no gore scenes and the werewolf costumes are laughable.” Cult Film Finder

“It’s basically a low-rent version of Fright Night (not to be confused with Night Fright). If I had been eight years old when I watched this, I would’ve enjoyed it. But I wasn’t, so I didn’t.” Kevin Burns, The Video Basement
