Beast Beneath aka The Wrath (USA, 2007)

‘Born from a terrifying true tale…’

Beast Beneath – aka The Wrath – is a 2007 American horror film directed by Julian Higgins (Poker Run) from a screenplay co-written with Bertie Higgins. It stars Kristina Morales, Daniel Bonjour and Bertie Higgins.

The film is erroneously listed twice on IMDb as both The Wrath and Beast Beneath. In the UK, it received a DVD release in 2010 as Wolfman.

A large ranch, in the area now known as Griffith Park in Los Angeles, belonged to Don Antonio Feliz in 1861. The Don’s best friend and a greedy attorney stole the property by orchestrating an illegal will at the Don’s deathbed.

After unsuccessfully contesting the will in court, the Don’s blind niece, Petranilla, invokes a curse that remains to the present day…

Two young lovers are horribly mutilated and murdered in Griffith Park. Meanwhile, Angelina Feliz, a descendant of the Don, finds a map showing a hidden treasure underneath the park. Unfortunately, it seems that a terrifying creature guards the treasure deep in a cave. Those who come close to the cave [Bronson Cave] meet an untimely, bloody death…

“Monster movies often live or die by their titular terrors – suffice to say that the less we see of this particular hairy scary, the better […] Even so, if you’re feeling less than discriminating and are in the mood to watch a modern day ghost tale with a lycanthropic spin, plus a dollop of Southern Californian history on the side, this just might serve the turn.” Aaron Christensen, Horror 101

” …the prosthetics work is okay. The creature isn’t spectacular but it isn’t painful to look at. Kind of an interesting beast, visually speaking. It isn’t really utilized very well, and all of the killing scenes look like gentle nuzzles […] The rest of my issues lie within the dialogue. It’s really bad.” Rooster Illusion Reviews

House of Dracula (USA, 1945)

House of Dracula is a 1945 American horror film released by Universal Pictures. It is a direct sequel to House of Frankenstein, and continued the theme of combining the studio’s three most popular monsters: Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange), Count Dracula (John Carradine), and the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.).

The film was directed by Erle C. Kenton from a screenplay by Edward T. Lowe Jr., based on a storyline by Dwight V. Babcock and George Bricker.

Count Dracula (Carradine) greets the castle’s owner, Dr. Franz Edelmann (Onslow Stevens). The Count, who introduces himself as “Baron Latos”, explains that he has come to Visaria to find a cure for his vampirism. Dr. Edelmann agrees to help.

Together with his assistants, Milizia (Martha O’Driscoll) and the hunchbacked Nina (Poni Adams), he has been working on a mysterious plant, the clavaria formosa, whose spores have the ability to reshape bone. Edelmann explains that he thinks vampirism can be cured by a series of blood transfusions. Dracula agrees to this, and Edelmann uses his own blood for the transfusions.

That night, Lawrence Talbot (Chaney Jr.) arrives at the castle. He demands to see Dr. Edelmann about a cure for his lycanthropy. Talbot is asked to wait. Knowing that the moon is rising, Talbot has himself incarcerated by the police. A crowd of curious villagers gathers outside the police station, led by the suspicious Steinmuhl (Skelton Knaggs)…

Reviews:

“The set design is big and luxurious; something we lost for a while, along with some of the ambiance. The lighting is just right. Photography and effects show global improvement, too. The story is silly but the title and promo alone allude to fun times, good energy and genuine acting, writing and directing from horror monuments. We get it all!” Steve Hutchison, Tales of Terror

“It’s so hilariously bad, it’s hard to believe that it’s done so seriously. The scene where Indelman reveals to Nina that Dracula is his new patient is something Mel Brooks didn’t better in Young Frankenstein. A scene where Indelman is battling in his mind between his good self and bad self, whether to revive the Frankenstein monster is so ludicrously over-the-top you’ve just got to cheer it.” MP Bartley, eFilm Critic

“Though borderline absurd, House of Dracula features one unique aspect to distinguish itself from earlier Hollywood renditions of Bram Stoker’s classic  novel; namely, Count Dracula—a personification of the devil himself—is portrayed as an unwilling and therefore sympathetic participant in the crimes committed by an ever-present demon of the mind.” Midnite Reviews

“”Nothing’s particularly scary. In the opening shot, the strings holding up the bat are clearly visible […] Except for that bat, the production values and sets are up to the studio’s standard, and it’s fun to watch a vintage cast going through familiar paces.” Mike Mayo, The Horror Show Guide

Buy: Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca

“Unfortunately, as is too often the case with the perpetually rushed screenplays of these films, the latter half of the film fumbles an interesting beginning. Dracula, for no clearly discernible reason, injects Onslow Stevens with his blood and causes him to become a madman. There are some interesting scenes with Onslow Stevens running around the town, casting a giant shadow…” Richard Scheib, Moria

” …patently working with a low budget and failing to find much that was satisfying to do with its cast. Scripted by Edward T. Lowe, as the previous House of Frankenstein had been, it adopted the new outlook of the benefits of science – or their drawbacks – to inform its plotting, looking forward to the science fiction movies that would become hugely popular in the next decade.” Graeme Clark, The Spinning Image

Cast and characters:

  • John Carradine as Count Dracula
  • Onslow Stevens as Dr. Franz Edelmann
  • Lon Chaney Jr. as Lawrence “Larry” Talbot / The Wolf Man
  • Martha O’Driscoll as Milizia Morelle
  • Jane Adams as Nina, the hunchback
  • Lionel Atwill as Police Inspector Holtz
  • Ludwig Stössel as Ziegfried
  • Glenn Strange as Frankenstein’s Monster
  • Skelton Knaggs as Steinmuhl

Trivia:

Although Glenn Strange appears as the Monster in most of the film, footage of Chaney as the Monster from The Ghost of Frankenstein and Boris Karloff from Bride of Frankenstein was recycled; Karloff appears in a dream sequence, while Chaney, as well as his double Eddie Parker, are seen in footage in a fire scene.

‘If you raise the dead prepare to join them’

The Unliving is a 2004 American erotic horror film written and directed by Fred Olen Ray (Scalps; Evil ToonsSuper Shark). It was originally released in a ‘softer’ version as Tomb of the Werewolf. It stars Paul Naschy, Jay Richardson and Michelle Bauer.

A TV crew makes its way to Castle Daninsky in search of a story. The castle is rumoured to possess a secret treasure hidden within its walls, but ultimately death is all they find as the eternal Countess Elizabeth Bathory (Michelle Bauer) seeks to sacrifice them in order to please the Lord of Darkness, bathe in their blood, and revive Daninsky (Paul Naschy) from his tomb…

Reviews:

“That Naschy appears in The Unliving at all is reason enough for his fans to watch, although they should temper their expectations that this Daninsky outing feels like it tonally belongs with the others; it does not. As anyone familiar with the Olen Ray oeuvre knows, pure horror is not his thing; intentionally campy homages to pure horror are.” Rod Lott, Flick Attack

“I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, it delivers what it’s set out to deliver: boobs. But for us who really doesn’t care about boobs it’s Naschy that leads the dance. He’s old and somewhat frail, but makes the best of it even if the wigs are shoddy and the dialogue stiff. Too much sex, not enough gore, too little Naschy is my judgement.” Fred Anderson, Schmollywood Babylon

“Naschy himself does a commendable job and his audio, for once, isn’t dubbed over. He doesn’t say much and it’s in a thick Spanish accent, but they chose to keep his original voice. While it may be among the worst Naschy werewolf movies it’s an obligatory view for anyone who is a fan of the series.” The Gravedigger, Buried.com

Tomb of the Werewolf is about breasts. Naked female breasts. It is not about a Tomb or a Werewolf. There is a wolf man running around but he’s just filler until the next breast scene.” Dr. Gore’s Movie Reviews

‘The most feared monsters in cinematic history have met their match’

Stan Helsing is a 2009 Canadian-American comedy horror parody film written and directed by Bo Zenga (executive producer of Scary Movie and Turistas). It stars Steve Howey, Kenan Thompson, Diora Baird and Desi Lydic.

Stan Helsing (Steve Howey) is an underachieving employee at a video rental store named Schlockbuster. His teen-aged boss Sully orders him to drop off a bag of movies to the mother of the store’s owner or risk not having a job Monday morning.

Despite his arguments, he agrees to the request and manages to get his friend Teddy (Kenan Thompson), his ex-girlfriend Nadine (Diora Baird) and blonde massage therapist Mia (Desi Lydic) to take him there before they attend a Halloween party, even though it’s on the other side of town.

En route, to Stan’s surprise, he spots Lucky, the living doll (Jeff Gulka), who makes obscene gestures in the van next to them. Because of this disturbance, they miss their exit and decide to take a shortcut.

They come across a gas station where the perverted owners tell Stan that he may be related to the legendary Abraham Van Helsing, the monster hunter. They depart and after finding Stormy Night Estates, they discover the attendants never put gas into the car.

After they leave, they discover that all the citizens, including their waitress, Kay (Leslie Nielsen), were actually dead due to a massive fire that consumed the town ten years earlier. They encounter several monsters including lookalikes of Pinhead, the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees, Chucky, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and a Jewish Michael Meyers

The film apparently cost $14 million but only took $11,014,125 at the box office.

Reviews:

Stan Helsing is sloppily made, committed to the lowest form of comedy to see itself to the end. Why play so aggressively crude? Zenga displays only a tenuous grasp on timing and delivery, throwing out whatever taboo, sexualized, or gross-out idea he can to keep the viewer interested. It’s a shame nothing in the film generates laughs, as the picture has energy to spare.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com

“The jokes came fast and the jokes came furiously but very few of the jokes were funny […] The only thing that saved this parody is that it was STILL better than those Seltzer / Friedberg ‘parodies’ Date Movie and their brethren.” Film Critics United

“A detention hall filled with 14-year-old boys would probably demand greater sophistication […] By the time we reach the climactic karaoke smackdown, we have learned more about Freddy Krueger’s personal hygiene challenges — and how to make a shockingly bad movie — than we ever wanted to know.” Jeanette Catsoulis, The New York Times

“It’s not a great movie by any means, but compared to the Friedberg/Seltzer output, it looks like a masterpiece, and it’s got a handful of funny ad-libs and at least a couple of gorgeous women […] As for Stan Helsing, some of you would hate watching a bunch of faux horror icons performing a parody version of “YMCA”, and others might find it mildly amusing.” Tyler Foster, DVD Talk

“OK, questions: why is Michael Jewish? Why is Fweddy done up like some late-80s rapper? Why is there but one murder of a non-important extra? Who green-lit this movie? It really is a train wreck of a film, made only worse when I learned that ‘Mason’ (Jesus wept…) was played by Ken Kirzinger, who played Jason – yes, Jason – in Freddy vs. Jason. Nothing in this film even flirts with being funny.” Hudson Lee, Vegan Voorhees

“It may not be as crude and offensive as the earlier Scary Movie films but it’s got its fair share of smut. There are a handful of decent scenes, probably the pick of which involves the characters stumbling onto the set of a hardcore gay porno featuring Frankenstein’s monster. But it’s slim pickings and they are too few and far between.”Andrew Smith, Popcorn Pictures

Reviews:

“Wafts of Ginger Snaps are prevalent throughout, but this still is a pretty different take on the subject of the tapping into one’s more bestial side. Heavy in character, yet light in convincing effects, Blood Redd isn’t your typical werewolf tale and in a subgenre that really doesn’t have a lot or originality, that’s impressive in itself.” Ambush Bug, Ain’t It Cool News

“The movie, despite its many glaring flaws, if you can get by them, has a lot of good ideas and really has a well thought out story. It’s a unique and interesting take on werewolves that I really haven’t seen before. And I honestly think that if someone were to look at this movie and borrow some ideas from it, the end product could be great.” Patrick Sullivan

“I really did like the plot idea […] However, the low budget aspect killed the film. The sound wasn’t good. The special effects, which we see at the end, were abysmally bad. The soundtrack which started out fine during the opening credits feels like a tired piano. The acting was below “B” film standard with the dialogue not helping. The Movie Guy

Reviews:

“It’s very low budget so the special effects are mostly practical and basic but not awful at all, they are fun and give the whole thing an 80’s horror movie feel. My favorite shorts were both of Rea’s offerings, the werewolf one because even though the acting was cringey it was quite fun and his vampire movie because it was a little more unexpected than the others and the most original.” Sarah Budd, Horrorscreams Videovault

Monster X is a fun monster flick which gives a twist to some of the classic monsters of the genre. As with most horror anthologies, it has varying degrees of success, but with the movie’s short running times each of the films are direct in their approach, so it moves at a good pace and doesn’t feel drawn out.” Philip Rogers, Nerdly

“The film is admittedly short considering all the things crammed into it although this maybe why Monster X works despite some script issues. It has a fair few gags in it, too. One for horror movie fans to watch for it’s spirit and obvious love of the genre it sometimes pokes fun at, Monster X is a short yet rewarding watch.” James Simpson, Infernal Cinema

Wolves is a 2014 Canadian horror film written and directed by David Hayter (writer of X-Men; X-Men 2; Watchmen). Steven Hoban (Haunter; Splice; Ginger Snaps franchise) produced. It stars Jason Momoa, Lucas Till and Merritt Patterson.

Until Cayden meets a certifiable lunatic named Wild Joe, who sets him on a path to the ominous town of Lupine Ridge, to hunt down the truths of his history. But in the end, who’s really hunting whom?

Reviews:

“This is one silly movie. I mean, it’s hairy balls-to-the-wall, smoking’-on-a-skull-pipe silly. Maybe even a little “SyFy original series” silly, but with higher production value and impressive makeup FX. What it’s not is full-on bonkers.” Ryan Turek, ComingSoon.net

Wolves is ambitious but never completely in Hayter’s control, striving to build a mythology that could be covered in numerous sequels without ever establishing a reason to care about the first installment. It’s loud and violent, but the feature drags more than it should, struggling with iffy performances and lousy visual effects to raise a properly furry screen commotion.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com

Buy DVD: Amazon.co.uk

“Hayter is a good writer, so much so he managed to forge an impressive script from the greatest comic book ever written, Alan Moore’s Watchmen. Here, he’s created a very watchable feature that’s breezy, fun, and has Stephen McHattie in it too! If there’s one gripe, it’s that you can’t help but wish he’d loosened those shackles a little further and delivered something R-rated…” Dave Wain, The Schlock Pit

“Silly beyond words, Wolves is indifferently acted and unconvincingly realized. Battle scenes fall flat when only a handful of extras merit full makeup (suggesting a less than elastic budget), while the rest are left to slobber and crouch unenhanced.” Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times

House of the Black Death – USA, 1965

‘Shock! Male witchcraft in evil terror!’

House of the Black Death is a 1965 American film directed by Harold Daniels (Annabelle Lee; My World Dies Screaming) and Jerry Warren from a screenplay by Rich Mahoney, apparently based on R. Warner-Crozetti’s novel The Widderburn Horror. It stars Lon Chaney Jr., John Carradine and Andrea King.

The film is also known as Blood of the Man Beast (American alternative title), Blood of the Man Devil (American reissue title) and Night of the Beast (shooting title).

Reginald Le Borg (Diary of a MadmanThe Black Sleep; The Mummy’s Ghost; et al) was the 2nd unit director.

Two brothers, both of whom are warlocks, use their powers and covens of witches to battle over the family fortune…

Reviews:

“It’s embarrassing to see old time acting pros in such a rock-bottom movie, although in the cases of Carradine and Chaney, fans ought to have been used to it by this point. Chaney, in robe and cowl and sporting little forehead horns, often looks and acts quite innocent and amiable in his role as the evil warlock while Carradine, playing the kindly warlock, is scowly and sour-bellied.” Tom Weaver, John Carradine: The Films

“John Carradine and Chaney give good performances as a pair of warlocks plagues by werewolves and belly dancers. With the teaming of hacks Warren and Le Borg, the cast is rendered powerless against this dull mess.” Alfred Eaker

Buy DVD: Amazon.com

“The only thing that saves this film from being a total failure are Lon Chaney Jr. and John Carradine who have the ability to make even the crappiest material palatable.  And while the script was garbage, the basic story and premise of the film was actually okay. All it lacked was execution.” The Telltale Mind

” …this incoherent mess of werewolves and witchcraft is pretty bottom of the barrel, though it is enlivened by good performances from Lon Chaney Jr. and John Carradine, and the occasional effective use of smoke and fog. Beyond that, this is good cure for insomnia.” Dave Sindelar, Fantastic Movie Musings and Ramblings

“What’s really missing are any scenes with Carradine and Chaney together. There may have been scheduling difficulties but they do appear on the same set (a desperately unconvincing village square) so a ‘cutaway’ conversation should have been possible.” Mark David Welsh

“This lackluster production is hampered by a weak story overstuffed with metaphysical mumbo-jumbo and spiced up with belly-dancers and cut-price werewolves, and it keeps its dueling warlocks (who look decidedly bored with the entire ordeal) from sharing any scenes together.” AllMovie

The small desert town of Death Valley is home to a local Biker gang known as the Legion of Outlaws, an MC who traffic drugs, prostitution and the occasional werewolf attack…

Reviews:

“The picture by design was supposed to be campy and sexy, but was just plain stupid with nudity. The sound in the bar was choppy. A microphone shadow appeared on the wall, and the werewolves looked more like vampires.” Michael Ledo

Betsy – USA, 2017

‘A new shape of an old tail’

Betsy is a 2017 werewolf-themed supernatural horror film written and directed by Shawn Burkett (Don’t F*ck in the Woods and sequel; Watch This; Theatre of the Deranged II segment ‘Panty Raid’). It stars Marylee Osborne, Kelci C. Magel, Erin R. Ryan and Josh Miller.

After surviving a vicious assault in the city, Betsy moves to the country to stay with her friend Kayte in hopes of starting over. She meets and falls for Sam (Josh Miller) the local game warden. Everything seems to be going smoothly, however something begins clawing its way into the moonlight…

Reviews:

“The film features a wonderful cast including Kelci C. Magel and Josh Miller, whose characters of Betsy and Sam ground the film with their love story and give it emotional weight, making you care about what happens. The final act felt a bit rushed but overall Betsy is a formidable beast that I would wholeheartedly recommend.” Pop Horror

“The final effect reminded me of an old grindhouse favorite Werewolf Woman, and yes, that is a good thing. However it is disappointing when characters talk about how torn apart a victim was and then we see a corpse with not so much damage. There are a couple of good gore scenes, but the disconnect between the descriptions and what we see hurts overall.” Jim Morazzini, Beneath the Underground

“The transformation of Betsy offers us a new age werewolf tale with more of a humanoid look that is plenty brutal without sacrificing the development of a great character. The movie has a great, professional look as well.” Possessed Radio

The Werewolf of Washington – USA, 1973

‘Makes it perfectly clear’

The Werewolf of Washington is a 1973 American comedy horror film written, edited and directed by Milton Moses Ginsberg, produced by Nina Schulman and starring Dean Stockwell, Biff McGuire, Clifton James, and Michael Dunn.

The movie satirises several individuals in the Richard Nixon Presidency.

Jack Whittier (Dean Stockwell) is the press secretary for the White House and for the President of the United States, while on assignment in Hungary, he is bitten by a wolf who actually turns out to be a man; when Jack tries to report it, he believes it is the work of Communists.

When he returns to Washington D.C., he is assigned to the President (Biff McGuire); he is also been having an affair with the President’s daughter Marion (Jane House). Jack suddenly starts to feel different changes about him whenever the moon is full…

Review:

Obviously, The Werewolf of Washington was written as a satiric comedy during the Watergate era. Alas, due to sludgy direction, stiff editing, and unfocused writing, it just comes off as a miscalculated mess. Interestingly, it’s very reminiscent of a later and much better film, Mike Nichols’ Wolf.

However, where Jim Harrison’s script for Wolf deftly and intelligently intertwines the world of publishing as a savage dog-eat-dog environment in which only the strong survive with Will Randall’s rediscovery of his virility – in every sense of the word, Milton Ginsberg’s script for The Werewolf of Washington fails miserably in this same respect.

This is due largely to countless gratuitous scenes and a serious lack of satiric precision; because of these aesthetic mistakes, Ginsberg as writer and director undermines his purpose by failing to connect the vicious mythology of the werewolf with the vicious realities of politics. In this muddy broth, both the horror and comedy elements lose their potency, leaving the viewer missing the spice and feeling unsatisfied and ambivalent.

Ben Spurling, HORRORPEDIA

Other reviews:

“Enjoyable spoof of horror movies which succeeds by observing the conventions and not allowing its determination to satirise American politics get in any way of the narrative.” Alan Frank, The Horror Film Handbook

“One of those faults is the werewolf getup. Maybe they didn’t have enough money to tear the suit, or maybe it’s supposed to be a sight gag, but Stockwell simply looks like a guy wearing a werewolf mask. His nice suit never gets torn or even disheveled, making it hard to swallow. I don’t need a full blown transformation, but at least glue some hair on his chest and rip the shirt a little.” Horror Movie a Day

” …it’s the only film in history in which the word Pentagram is repeatedly mistaken for Pentagon, though the confusion over shape and function is understandable. There are lots of other laughs to be had, some of them might even be intentional, but it’s difficult to tell. It’s a rather cheap and poorly-produced piece of work, but amazingly the acting is half-decent in parts.” Nigel Honeybone, HorrorNews.net

“Dean Stockwell is quite good as a man torn between his two lives and puts plenty of energy into his performance with the make-up on. He leaps and bounces all over the place as the werewolf and has the mannerisms down to a tee. But this is where the problems lie. Once the werewolf scenes are over, the political satire is terrible.” Andrew Smith, Popcorn Pictures

“Dean Stockwell gives a good performance and there’s a funny scene where he starts to turn into a werewolf while bowling with the President […] And then there’s a scene where the werewolf attacks a woman in a phone booth and it’s actually rather suspenseful and almost scary. Plus, Biff McGuire is great and all too plausible as the vapid President.” Lisa Marie Bowman, Through the Shattered Lens

“A hit-or-miss comedy which blends political satire and lycanthropic laughs […] A poorly integrated subplot involving a mad dwarf scientist (Dunn) is good for a few laughs but like the half-hearted pastiche of Universal’s The Wolf Man it goes nowhere.” Nigel Floyd, Time Out Film Guide

“The laughs are few and far between in this political horror spoof […] It’s such a bizarre idea that one really wants it to be funny, but the promise is never fulfilled, and the picture ultimately disappoints.” TV Guide

Reviews:

” …Full Moon High is one of the weaker entries in the Larry Cohen canon […] There’s a smattering of laughs, some vaguely engaging inter-generational commentary, bit parts by Bob Saget and Pat Morita, and I really like the low-rent map used for travel montages…” Junta Juleil’s Culture Shock

“It is generally dark and sexually charged, and fairly biting with satiric elements. At the same time, it is also very traditionally goofy, which makes for a weird combination. It also doesn’t help that it has a few awkward moments of jokes that don’t land…” Gordon Maples, Misan[trope]y

“The special effects are bad in a comically obvious way – a hand comes down and squashes the lead model of a plane as it crosses a map of Europe; and during the transformation sequence, the camera lens is ‘accidentally’ shot, which proves the opportunity for an off-screen voice to describe what great effects the audience are missing.” Richard Scheib, Moria

“It’s all very silly but in good fun, and when Adam Arkin’s father Alan Arkin comes in as Dr. Brand, the sarcastic psychiatrist who “shames people down” from ledges and mocks the depressed in an attempt to enliven them, Full Moon High hits its high notes again.” The Moon is a Dead World

“Critical opinion, even among genre aficionados, remains divided on the merits of Full Moon High but Larry Cohen fans will find much to chew on as he reworks some of his pet themes in a loosely comic, borderline improvisational fashion.” Richard Harland Smith, Turner Classic Movies

Choice dialogue:

“I don’t believe in vampires, werewolves and virgins – I’ve never seen any of those things.”

“Oh, no, I’ve never killed anyone. I just kinda nibble. I’m a nosher. A little bit goes a long way you know. But I’m worried one day my eyes will get bigger than my stomach…”

“No, don’t leave me. Come back you premature ejaculator!”

Filming locations:

Filmed partially at John Burroughs Senior High School, Burbank, California, in the summer of 1979. Also filmed on location in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, on the football field in Bergen County Park.

Background:

Larry Cohen said of the film, “It has some interesting ideas about how life in America has changed sexually and politically since the early sixties. All of Arkin’s friends have changed but he hasn’t. And whereas he changes into a werewolf all of the time, his friends change into middle-aged people while he is gone, with different values and different ideas. They change as much as he does, actually.”
